when you read STI in relation to Subaru Tecnica International do you say “ess tee eye”, or “sty”

Well, it depends what language I’m speaking... At home I speak english on a daily basis, so esse tee eye.
But I’m also french so when I speak french, it’s esse teh ee
And no, I would never say “sty” lol
And yes, it;s a mistake for sure (or not).... I think it it should be “an STI wagon”.

Depends on how dirty it is inside. Ba-dump...tssss!

Option one. Same with AMG, GTI, GTO, SLS, CTS, and pretty much every single other three-letter car designation.

Well if I read it in Dutch it would be something like: es te ie
But in English, it would be most like your first option: ess tee eye

I pronounce each letter individually, so yeah, it should “an STI” where I’m coming from.
The people that read it as “sty” are probably the same people that read GUI as “gooey.”

And say .jif instead of .gif.

Who would ever say “sty” lol. In English, I mean.
Shouldn’t it be “An STI” anyway?

This. Who pronounces these?!
![]() 05/13/2016 at 10:36 |

gif not jif. jif is peanut butter
Graphics
Interchange
Format
if you pronounce the first letter of each in the way you’d say the word it’s gif.

I always use that fact to try and correct people. I mostly get eye rolls.
![]() 05/13/2016 at 10:43 |

that’s because most people are idiots, don’t understand file formats, and don’t understand language.
it’d be better if they jammed some peanut butter in their mouths and shut up.

Some guy who was training us up on some software kept calling it a Gooey.

Quote from one of my friends “I want to get these all in one group but don’t know how”

Yes, letters in a car name should always be spelled out (if they don't make a word). I remember a commercial last year (I think) for the Ford Taurus SHO. The guy doing the commercial kept calling the Ford "show". And this was a real Ford commercial, not some stupid local dealership. It took everything in my power to not scream at the tv when that commercial aired.

oh man
You need better friends lol
And I think you have a rough idea of what I do for a living so obviously keeping track of files/organizing in folders is kinda my thing.

The “i” was capitalized in 2006.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone pronounce STI as if it were an acronym, but to my knowledge there isn’t a clear rule for abbreviations vs. acronyms other than “acronyms are abbreviations pronounced as if it were a word”.
You should file this post under “English Sucks”.
![]() 05/13/2016 at 23:58 |

It should be “an es...” but “a” is correct if you’re talking about what the acronym stands for

Apparently, when you work in the medical field and are talking about wanting an STI someday, you catch some pretty odd looks. “Why yes, I would love that chlamydia in pearl white."
